All Zebra ZT231 Printers can print Direct Thermal, which means you use Direct Thermal Labels that do not use a ribbon.  If you purchased a model that also has the ability to print using Thermal Transfer then you have the option to print either Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer.   

Direct Thermal Labels and Thermal Transfer Labels look the same, but they are different labels.  If you are printing via Direct Thermal, then you need a Direct Thermal Label (no ribbon).  If you are printing via Thermal Transfer, then you will need a Thermal Transfer Label and the appropriate ribbon.
